Composite Restoration:
A Composite Restoration is tooth-colored filling or bonding. It is used to replace older amalgam (silver/mercury) fillings, fill new cavities, and, because of its ability to mimic natural tooth color, it can also be used for cosmetic bonding. A cosmetic bonding is typically completed on anterior teeth and allows us to give our patients a more esthetically pleasing result without the need for major restorative work.
Amalgam fillings can be replaced with this composite-resin material. Over time silver fillings can expand and contract causing micro-leakage around and under the filling. This micro-leakage can allow bacteria to overtake an area of tooth that is unable to be cleaned which results in tooth decay. Micro-leakage can typically be caught before decay is too rampant by examining the teeth and taking Intra-Oral pictures with our small, wand-like camera.
Composite material is actually chemically bonded to your natural tooth. With this process we are able to preserve more tooth structure which allows for overall stronger, healthier teeth.
